Angelo is 15 years old and lives in a small village in the mountains of southern Sardinia in the post-war years. He is very shy and often teased because of his older brother Agostino’s disability. Unable to defend himself, he wishes he had the self-confidence of his best friend, the charismatic Bastiano. Life seems to unfold in rural tranquillity, but the village’s peace is threatened by the arrogance of the Blackshirts. One night, as the entire village gathers around a large bonfire in the square to celebrate, Angelo can no longer remain indecisive—he must choose which side to stand on.
