As the countdown to the 19th edition of Al Ard Film Festival begins, Associazione Amicizia Sardegna Palestina is hard at work curating an exciting line-up. In the meantime, the association is busy organizing a series of events leading up to the main festival, which will be held in Cagliari, Sardinia in 2023 (precise dates to be defined yet).

One of these events organised by our volunteers will be a seminar on December 14, 2022, in collaboration with the Sardinian professional association Proteo Fare Sapere. It will be for school teachers of all levels, with the participation of FLC CGIL of Cagliari . This event will take place at the Teatro Massimo in Cagliari, in room M2, from 8:30am to 1pm, and will focus on the topic of “Orientalism and Cinema”.

The seminar will be introduced by Michele Zurru from Proteo Fare Sapere, and will be chaired and coordinated by Samed Ismail from Associazione Amicizia Sardegna Palestina. The event will feature several expert reports on the topic, including Mauro Pala discussing Orientalism of Edward Said, Filippo Kalomenìdis speaking on the topic of “Decolonizing Cinema”, Francesco Bachis presenting on “Return to Arabesque: Orientalist Imaginaries in the Work of Clara Gallini”, and Antonello Zanda exploring the topic of “Colonial Cinema in the Arab World”.

This seminar is a unique opportunity for local teachers to learn more about the use of cinema as a tool for analysing the interactions and connections that characterise different contexts in the Middle East. At the end of the meeting, attendees will receive a certificate of attendance.

The organisation of collateral events leading up to Al Ard Film Festival is an important aspect of the festival’s success. Not only do these events serve as a way to engage with the local community and build excitement for the festival, but they also provide additional opportunities for discussion and dialogue about Palestinian culture and cinema.

By hosting these events, we aim to create a rich and vibrant cultural experience for attendees, and help to further the festival’s mission of promoting Palestinian culture and storytelling. As the main festival approaches, be sure to keep an eye out for announcements coming from our Facebook page!
